Small things....larger!

It is spring, almost summer, once again in Japan, for this post I decided to take some close ups of the various flying and crawling friends that have awoken with the lengthening days.
I still don't have a lens to get extremely close to my subjects but, with 12 mega pixels, a good sharp image can be cropped to achieve much the same effect.

Click the photos to enlarge.

A fly perched upon a flower petal.

This particular fly does its best to look like a wasp and thus scarier than it deserves!

A rather hairy butterfly sipping nectar concludes the prey section of this post.

Predators!
Any gardener will welcome the Ladybug, destroyer of aphids in their garden.

Waiting,
Got 'im!
Spider dines on a gnat.

A surprisingly large jumping spider (11mm long) investigates a stray piece of cloth in a sink.

And decides the camera was much more interesting!

Fleeting Beauty

Spring in Japan is the time for cherry blossoms and cherry blossom viewing parties.
The blossoms only last for about a week or so.
Just starting to flower.

In full bloom.

Only one petal left here.
A gentle breeze creates a blizzard of cherry blossom petals, a lot like snow but warmer.

Yes, in case you were wondering you can eat them. I have had cherry blossom petals in a desert type of tofu and in some traditional Japanese sweets. It is an extremely subtle flavour.

Shitenno-ji Temple

On the way back from the cosplay parade in DenDen town Osaka, my friend, Zach, told me to go down a narrow alley. 'It leads to a main avenue and there is a subway station right there, you could even walk back to Tennoji-station. There is a kind of temple area there too.' Half disbelieving this, I set off.

Cresting a hill up the alley, I had my picture taken but some masked Japanese tourists.
Shooting from the hip, I took their picture too.

Upon reaching the end of the alley, I found there was indeed a subway station! Zach knows his maps. It was a station that was only two stops from my destination so I decided to walk. In a small temple there was a very charming prayer wheel:
The characters translate roughly to mean:One turn, one prayer.

Continuing down the avenue, I found myself to be near the Shitenno-ji temple, a major temple in Osaka. Inside most of the buildings were 'no photography' signs, outside, and on the temple grounds was filled with what could best be described as a huge garage sale type market. It was the spring equinox and the temple was incredibly busy.

Having taken many pictures of people that day (see the previous post Street Festival I took pictures of pigeons! Of which there were scores.

They always look so surprised.

Biscuit!
I'd hope the bird chews it, but they don't have teeth...Good luck bird.

Thank you for the directions Zach.

Street Festival in DenDen Town

On March 20th, coinciding with the public holiday for the spring equinox in Japan. A street festival was held in Denden town, the electronics (less so now) and Anime/gaming centre of Osaka.
Many people were in costumes based on game and anime characters most of which were very elaborate. You might recognize some of them, I recognized a few though not terribly many.

Friends, with whom I went to the festival, I don't think anyone is a specific character, could be wrong though.

Naruto!

Everyone had a camera, everyone.

I think it is the Aflac duck.

Everyone was having a very good time.

This guy went full Gundam, very very good costume. No humanity was visible.

I am thinking some kind of Japanese horror film or game, they look too innocent for anything else.

Another very elaborate costume, right down to the irides.

I did say everyone had a camera.

To get attention: Girl + Leather * Sword

This was the biggest crowd of photographers/people with camera phones that I saw during the entire festival.

I think this guy should get some credit for originality, classic game, perfect costume for it.
